Campaign for Military Service. On the second day of hearings, Wednesday, March 31, the three witnesses included only one suggested by the Campaign--Lawrence Korb, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower, Reserve Affairs and Logistics during the Reagan administration.

"The hearings were incredibly unfair Monday," said Feldblum. "There were no witnesses to articulate our point of view on the history and the legal issues, and the Committee did not receive the correct legal advice regarding the unconstitutionality of the ban." Feldblum, who is also a professor of law at Georgetown University, said the Campaign gave Nunn and his staff a list of suggested witnesses on the history and legal aspects of the ban but that the Committee did not use one of them on March 29.

Scott Williams, press secretary for Sen. Nunn, defended the hearings as "fair" and noted that the fact that some gay activists called the March 31 hearing a "victory" as evidence of that fairness. Williams said that even though the first day's hearing did not include any witnesses suggested by the

Campaign for Military Service, they have not been rejected as potential witnesses. And he noted that the Campaign has had access to discuss the hearings with the Committee, a fact which Feldblum confirmed.

When the Campaign did get its first recommended witness, Lawrence Korb, to the table, the Republican senators took the opportunity to scrutinize some of the gay

on Corethers. Another time, around Thanksgiving, Corethers says Johnson had choked her hard enough to leave marks on her neck. One time when the lovers had broken up, Corethers went out with a friend. Corethers says Johnson grabbed her out of a crowd, pushed her into a bathroom stall and threatened to strip her naked and beat her.

Corethers believes she was a battered spouse and tried to seek counseling. “I can't say I was scared of her, 'cause I really loved her but I was scared when she came after me." Corethers says that Johnson tried to control her life, limiting phone calls and visits from friends.

community's arguments for ending the ban. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took particular pains to discredit the Pentagon-generated studies that showed gay recruits to be as good or better than their heterosexual counterparts. Holding up his own copy of one of those reports, McCain said he couldn't find such statements. Korb explained that the copy he had was not the original report but an amended version.

"One time she told me, 'I just want to make you little and put you in my pocket so no one else could see you'."

Corethers is set to go on trial for the murder of Shirley Johnson on June 8. Corethers was initially charged with voluntary manslaughter but the charge was upgraded when it became known that Corethers is a licensed security guard and has had training with firearms.

Elaborating further on the fatal evening, Corethers said she tried several times to call for help or leave the house but Johnson prohibited her. "The last time she hit me was in the eye. She even tried to get to me while my mother was standing between us."

While there were many attempts by Republicans to draw parallels between the need to segregate gay troops in the same way female troops are often segregated now in the military, two Democrats attempted to draw parallels between discrimination against black troops and those holding unpopular religious tenets.

Recalling her decision to get her gun, Corethers said, "This girl is about to kill me, I have to get her out of my house.' Corethers says that she didn't even know where Johnson was when she pulled the gun from behind the hand towel in the linen closet. "I cocked the gun and it went off. It must have ricocheted because they say it hit her in the back."

As is common in relationships where battering takes place, Corethers still says she loves Johnson. "I will say it on a stack of bibles...I loved her like my son and my mother. She was my first lover and I thought we would be together forever."
